WNN - jew yawk Shitty The coronavirus is killing black and Latino people in New York City at twice the rate that it is killing white people, according to preliminary data released on Wednesday by the city.

The disparity reflected longstanding and persistent economic inequalities and differences in access to health care, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday morning.

“There are clear inequalities, clear disparities in how this disease is affecting the people of our city,” Mr. de Blasio said. “The truth is that in so many ways the negative effects of coronavirus — the pain it’s causing, the death it’s causing — tracks with other profound health care disparities that we have seen for years and decades.”

The preliminary death rate for Hispanic people in the city is about 22 people per 100,000; the rate for black people is 20 per 100,000; the rate for white people is 10 per 100,000; and the rate for Asian people is 8 per 100,000. The rates are adjusted for the size and age of the population.

Another 779 people in New York State died of the virus, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo reported on Wednesday, the second straight day that deaths spiked to new highs — even as the mayor acknowledged that the death toll may be higher than the reported figures.

Mr. de Blasio said on Wednesday that there are “100 to 200 people per day” in the city who die at home and are presumed to be virus victims but who are not tested and are left out of the virus death toll.

“This used to be a very, very rare thing in New York City,” the mayor said of people dying at home. “Obviously it’s jumped up, and the only thing that’s changed is Covid-19.”

There was also a glimmer of hope in the state’s hospitalization figures on Wednesday: The number of virus patients in hospitals had increased by 3 percent since Tuesday, the fifth consecutive day that number had increased by less than 10 percent — suggesting that the curve of infection may be flattening.

Mr. de Blasio swept into office in 2013 on a wave of rhetoric about how New York had become a bastion of inequality. Over the last six years of his administration, the mayor has set out to repair that imbalance with universal prekindergarten, increases in the minimum wage for city workers and paid sick leave.

The coronavirus outbreak has now illuminated other gaps between the haves and have-nots in New York City, from the availability of testing sites to the availability of beds and personal protection equipment at hospitals.

In New York City, Latinos represent 34 percent of the people who have died of the coronavirus but make up 29 percent of the city’s population, according to preliminary data from the city’s Health Department. Black people represent 28 percent of deaths but make up 22 percent of the population.

New York City’s racial disparity in deaths is similar to that in other parts of the state, but is actually less pronounced than in other states and cities that have released racial breakdowns of coronavirus cases and deaths.

In Chicago, for example, black people account for 72 percent of virus-related fatalities, even though they make up a little less than a third of the population.

Mr. Cuomo said on Wednesday that some of the difference could be attributed to poorer people having more untreated chronic health problems than more-affluent individuals, making them more likely to die if they contract the virus.

But he said that black and Hispanic people may also be disproportionately represented on the front lines of workers who are at high risk.

“Are more public workers Latino and African-American?” the governor asked. “Who don’t have a choice, frankly, but to go out there every day and drive the bus and drive the train and show up for work and wind up subjecting themselves to, in this case, the virus. Whereas many other people who had the option just absented themselves.”

Mr. Cuomo committed on Wednesday to more testing in minority and low-income communities and a study to find out why the disparities exist.

A study from Scott M. Stringer, the city comptroller, found that 75 percent of front-line workers in the city — grocery clerks, bus and train operators, janitors and child care staff — are minorities. More than 60 percent of people who work as cleaners are Latino, and more than 40 percent of transit employees are black.

If New York City is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the country, minorities and people in the city’s poorest neighborhoods reside at the core.

Data from the Health Department shows that emergency room visits for flulike symptoms have surged in neighborhoods where the typical household income is less than the city’s median of $60,000, according to an analysis of data by The New York Times. All but one of the top 20 neighborhoods with the lowest percentages of positive tests are in wealthy ZIP codes.

“We are watching, in real time, racial disparities and the pandemic of poverty,” said Michael Blake, an assemblyman from the Bronx whose district overlaps with one of the poorest congressional districts in the country.

Mr. Blake and other elected officials have called on the governor and mayor to set up more rapid testing sites in places like the South Bronx and southeast Queens, as well as a field hospital and temporary housing for medical and military personnel.

Mr. de Blasio and Dr. Oxiris Barbot, the city’s health commissioner, stressed that members of the city’s Hispanic community might have been discouraged from seeking health care because of the anti-immigrant rhetoric that has dominated the national discourse in recent years.

“The overlay of the anti-immigrant rhetoric across this country, I think, has real implications in the health of our community,” Dr. Barbot said Wednesday.

Mr. de Blasio said the city would increase its efforts to make sure the city’s public hospitals, where many poor and uninsured people go for treatment, have all the resources they need, including ventilators and personal protective equipment. The city will also make it easier for people calling 311 to speak to a health care worker in their language about the virus.

“This is about the most essential concept of ensuring that everyone gets health care regardless of their background, regardless of their ZIP code, regardless of their income,” Mr. de Blasio said.

The mayor had said on Tuesday that providing ethnicity data was less of a focus in a “crisis atmosphere.”

But Eric Adams, the Brooklyn borough president, said that not releasing the data had caused mistrust in minority communities. “There has been an outer-borough response to Covid-19 and a Manhattan response,” he said. “The allocation of resources should go to the area of higher needs.”

Malo Hutson, an associate professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and director of the school’s Urban Community and Health Equity Lab, said that the mayor’s challenge to lessen the inequities exposed by the outbreak was daunting.

“It’s one thing to raise the issue and say there are a disproportionate amount of blacks and low-income people who become infected with coronavirus,” Professor Hutson said. “It’s another to turn this into policy.”

For the purpose of creating coonflict and coonfusion, some in the Fake News Media are saying that it is the Governors decision to open up the states, not that of the President of the United States & the Federal Government. Let it be foolly understood that this is incorrect....

... It is the decision of me the ZOG-Emperor Drumpf, and for many good reasons. The very same reason a dog licks its nuts . . . because it can, cum-cum, cum-cum!!! Or so Ivanka said while giving me a fatherly lap-dance while that doofus jewrod was yapping some stupid shit about how since the impeachment bullet missed me by a mile I can do whatever I want. With that being said, the Administration and I are working closely with the Governors, and this will continue. Nipples Coumo will fall in line because the Cornholio-Boomer-Remover virus really affects niggers & beaners & jews before it touches whiggers. A decision by me, in coonjunction with the Governors and input from others, especially Daddy's little squirrel Ivanka and that kike doofus jewrod, will be made shortly! Pathetic !!!

McConnell Says States Should Consider Bankruptcy, Rebuffing Calls for Aid

The majority leader’s comments drew a strong rebuke from Gov. Andrew 'Nipples' Cuomo.

            http://whitenationalist.org/forum/sh...1233#post21233

(WNN) WASHINGTON — Senator Mitch McConnell took a hard line on Wednesday against giving cash-short states more federal aid in future emergency pandemic relief legislation, saying that those suffering steep shortfalls amid the coronavirus crisis should instead consider bankruptcy.

“I think this whole business of additional assistance for state and local governments needs to be thoroughly evaluated,” Mr. McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, said in an interview with the conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. “There’s not going to be any desire on the Republican side to bail out state pensions by borrowing money from future generations.”

Mr. McConnell’s comments were an explicit rejection of a top priority of Democrats who have pushed to spend tens of billions of dollars to help states. His staff members highlighted their partisan cast in a news release circulated a short time later, in which his statement appeared under the heading “Stopping Blue State Bailouts.” The phrase suggested that the top Senate Republican was singling out for scorn some of the hardest-hit, heavily Democratic states such as California, Illinois and New York.

The remarks drew a caustic reaction from Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York, who called the bankruptcy suggestion “one of the saddest, really dumb comments of all time.”

“OK, let’s have all the states declare bankruptcy — that’s the way to bring the national economy back,” he said.

Mr. Cuomo accused Mr. McConnell of hyperpartisanship, criticizing him for distinguishing among states based on their political leanings, rather than “states where people are dying. Why don’t we think about that? Not red and blue. Red, white and blue. They’re just Americans dying.”

Representative Peter T. King of New York, a fellow Republican, called Mr. McConnell’s remarks “shameful and indefensible.” “To say that it is ‘free money’ to provide funds for cops, firefighters and healthcare workers makes McConnell the Marie Antoinette of the Senate,” Mr. King said on Twitter on Wednesday night.

States do not now have the ability to declare bankruptcy to reduce their financial obligations, but Mr. McConnell raised the possibility of letting them do so rather than pouring federal money into rescuing them, which would push the federal government deeper into debt.

“I would certainly be in favor of allowing states to use the bankruptcy route,” he said. “It saves some cities. And there’s no good reason for it not to be available.”

The Democratic push for more federal aid to states and cities contending with a budget crunch because of the pandemic was a major sticking point in the latest round of legislation to respond to the outbreak, slated to clear Congress on Thursday, with Senate Republicans refusing to budge on the issue in negotiations.

Mr. McConnell had already made it clear on Tuesday that he would approach the next round of emergency funding much more cautiously. He went further in his comments on Wednesday, saying that he did not want Washington rescuing the pension plans of states that were struggling to keep up with their commitments to an array of union workers.

“We’ll certainly insist that anything we’d borrow to send down to the states is not spent on solving problems that they created for themselves over the years with their pension programs,” he said.

Mr. McConnell is likely to run into considerable resistance to his position from the White House, congressional Democrats, governors of both parties and even some lawmakers in his own party.

After the Senate vote Tuesday, top Democrats said that President Trump was open to the idea of helping states with their pension issues and that Mr. McConnell had been the chief obstacle to getting money for local governments this time around.

In a pair of Twitter posts on Tuesday, Mr. Trump said that after he signed the latest round of emergency pandemic legislation, he was ready to open discussions on help for “State/Local Governments for lost revenues from COVID 19, much needed Infrastructure Investments for Bridges, Tunnels, Broadband, Tax Incentives for Restaurants, Entertainment, Sports, and Payroll Tax Cuts to increase Economic Growth.”

Democrats were also confident that Congress would move forward with more relief for states, with Democratic leaders of the House and Senate promising a robust program. Several Republican lawmakers have introduced or signed on to proposals to provide huge sums to struggling states.

In his rebuke to Mr. McConnell, Mr. Cuomo said the most recent round of coronavirus relief was woefully inadequate, complaining that the lack of money for states was ridiculous.

“They funded small businesses,” he said. “Great, good move. How about police? How about fire? How about teachers? How about schools?”

Mr. McConnell is a longtime rival of the labor movement and will be in no hurry to move forward with anything resembling pension relief for what he considers overly generous benefits that states mistakenly provided.

“We all have governors regardless of party who would love to have free money,” he said.

Officials in the United States have reported more than 11 million total cases of coronavirus as of Sunday, as the country’s outbreaks lead to agonizing new levels of hospitalizations. Cases passed 10 million just a week ago, and more than 1 in 400 Americans have tested positive since.

The latest virus surge began accelerating across much of the country in mid-October. It took just over two weeks for the nation to go from eight million cases to nine million on Oct. 30; from nine to 10 million took only 10 days.

The country logged more than 135,100 new cases on Sunday, the most cases reported on a Sunday since the pandemic began, raising the new seven-day average to more than 150,000 new cases a day, an 81 percent increase from two weeks ago. Hospitalizations are a record 69,987.

So the ZOG-virus is increasing within the ZOGland as the skrules re-open and the weather turns cool and ZOGlings are indoors with each other in what used to becum known as the flu season. Now the tested cases of the ZOG-virus are rising.

Two states, Maryland and New Jersey, set single-day case records on Sunday, breaking their own records from the day before; 28 states added more cases in the last week than in any other seven-day period, according to a New York Times database.

As if anyone cares what happens to these two "shithole states" within the ZOGland.

Deaths nationwide remain at lower levels than in spring’s peak, but they are rising rapidly and approaching 250,000. There were 620 new deaths reported on Sunday, the highest number of deaths reported on a Sunday since May 17, pushing the seven-day average to more than 1,140 a day, a 39 percent increase from the average two weeks ago.

Dr. Michael Osterholm, an adviser to President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., said the country was “in a very dangerous period,” calling it the most dangerous public health crisis since the 1918 influenza pandemic, which killed an estimated 50 million worldwide, including some 675,000 Americans. “My worst fear is we will see what we saw happening in other countries, where people were dying on the streets,” he said on the NBC program “Meet the Press.” “The health care system is breaking, literally breaking.”

Adm. Brett Giroir, the assistant secretary of health and human services, called the situation “critical” on the ABC program “This Week.”

Blah, blah, blah, blah . . . The ZOG-virus is gonna kill all the ZOGling whigger & mamzer ass-clowns across the fruited & nutted ZOGplain.

The pandemic continues to take a disproportionate toll on Americans of color, who have been hospitalized at rates roughly four times higher than non-Hispanic whites since the start of the epidemic.

Hispanic or Latino people have been hospitalized at the highest rate, 4.2 times the rate of whites, with non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native people hospitalized at 4.1 times the rate of whites and African-Americans at 3.9 times the rate of whites, according to figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The figures were tabulated through the week ending Nov. 7.

The higher hospitalization rates have been linked to higher positivity rates, as nonwhite Americans are more likely to be essential workers with jobs in the food service industry or home health care, which cannot be carried out remotely and require interacting with the public. These jobs often don’t provide health insurance or paid time off, benefits that enable workers to stay home when sick.

Many people in these communities are also more likely to live in multigenerational households in densely populated communities, where infections spread quickly and easily.

Here is the money shot. The beaners -- being related to the gooks -- are over four times as likely to get and die of the ZOG-virus as whiggers. And the niggers -- not being related to anything that wants to be admittedly related to niggers -- are catching and dying of the ZOG-virus nearly four times as much as ZOGling whiggers.

Now if this ZOG-virus doesn't seem like a perfect way for ZOGling whiggers to get rid of ZOG-invading beaners and ZOG-parasiting off'n niggers using the inevitable spread of the ZOG-virus then I don't know what else is.

In a speech on Sunday criticizing President Trump’s vaccine distribution plans, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York said that the pandemic had revealed “the systemic discrimination in this nation.”

Nipples Cuomo thinks that EVERYTHING is waycist against beaners and niggers, especially the ZOG-virus, which to its credit, don't like beaners and niggers much either.

“That is the sad reality,” Mr. Cuomo said on Sunday at Riverside Church in Manhattan. “And we must have the courage to face it and to admit it because you will never solve a problem that you are unwilling to admit.”

So then Nipples puts the infected into the nursing homes where the oldsters croak off right quick.

BEIJING (AP) — After a two-week quarantine, the real work can begin. Maybe.

A World Health Organization team of researchers emerged from their hotel Thursday for the first time since their arrival in the central Chinese city of Wuhan to start searching for clues into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The visit has been shrouded in secrecy: Details of their itinerary have not been released, and it's unknown how much access China will give the researchers to the sites they want to visit and the people they want to talk to.

WHY IS THE TEAM IN CHINA?

Scientists hope that information on the earliest known cases of the new coronavirus — which was first identified in Wuhan — will help them better understand where it came from and prevent similar pandemics in the future.

Researchers around the world are eager for access to samples taken from the Huanan Seafood Market, which had an early outbreak, and Wuhan hospital records.

The team may visit the market itself as well as the locations of other early cases.

It could also go to a laboratory at the Wuhan Institute of Virology that was built after the 2003 SARS pandemic and maintains an extensive archive of genetic sequences of bat coronaviruses. U.S. officials in the previous Trump administration suggested without offering evidence that the virus could have escaped from the institute.

Experts say it’s unlikely the new coronavirus emerged from the lab in Wuhan and overwhelmingly say analysis of the new coronavirus’s genome rules out the possibility that it was engineered by humans.

The researchers might also visit the hospitals that were overwhelmed at the height of the pandemic in China and the local branch of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The seafood market and other places where early cases emerged remain important because the virus is constantly evolving, as the new variants identified in the United Kingdom and South Africa show.

                  ———

WHAT DO RESEARCHERS HOPE TO LEARN?

Wuhan is where COVID-19 cases were first detected, but it is highly possible the virus came to the industrial city of 11 million people from elsewhere.

Genetic sequencing shows the new coronavirus started in bats and likely jumped to another animal before infecting humans. The virus that is the closest known relative of the one that causes COVID-19 has been found in bats in a mine shaft nearly 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) southwest of Wuhan, near China’s border with Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. The Associated Press was blocked from visiting the mine.

People began falling ill in Wuhan in December 2019, and many had links to the seafood market. Scientists initially suspected the virus came from wild animals sold at the market, prompting China to crackdown on the wildlife trade.

But the subsequent discovery of earlier cases challenged that theory. China's CDC said samples taken from the market indicate it was likely a place where the virus spread, not where it started. The WHO team’s ability to further our understanding of the virus — and its credibility — could hinge in part on getting access to those samples.

Studying the genes of the earliest known cases in Wuhan could provide clues to how it got from bats to people and whether it was through a mammal such as a bamboo rat or a civet.

                  ———

WHAT OBSTACLES DOES THE TEAM FACE?

The big question is what China will allow the researchers see and do. The ruling Communist Party is concerned the research could shed light on its handling of the virus that could open it up to international criticism — and even demands for financial compensation if it is found to have been negligent.

China has stifled independent reports about the outbreak at home and published little information on its research into the origins of the virus. An AP investigation found that the government has strictly controlled all COVID-19-related research and forbids researchers from speaking to the media.

Another AP investigation found WHO officials privately complained that China had dragged its feet on sharing critical information about the outbreak, including the new virus’s genetic sequence, even as the U.N. health agency publicly praised China for what it called a speedy response.

China, stung by complaints it allowed the disease to spread, has suggested the virus could have come from abroad. A government spokesperson has said the origins hunt will require work beyond China’s borders, including in bat habitats in Southeast Asian nations. An expert on the WHO team has suggested the same thing, and this is a possibility researchers are exploring.

                  ———

WHEN WILL WE KNOW THE ANSWERS?

The search for the origins of COVID-19 is likely to take years. It took more than a decade to find the origins of SARS, and the origins of Ebola, first identified in the 1970s, remain elusive. But knowing where the virus came from could help prevent future outbreaks of viruses that cross to people from wild animals.

his week, public health officials in the state of Michigan have revealed that at least 246 residents have tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated. At least three of them have also died since recently receiving their vaccine.

According to a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Lynn Sutfin, the cluster of cases covers the period between 1 January and 31 March. Each of the group are confirmed to have tested positive at least two weeks after getting their final does of the vaccine, with a total of 11 persons hospitalized from the group.

“Some of these individuals may ultimately be excluded from this list due to continuing to test positive from a recent infection prior to being fully vaccinated,” said Sutfin.

She added, “These cases are undergoing further review to determine if they meet other CDC criteria for determination of potential ‘breakthrough’ including the absence of a positive antigen or PCR test less than 45 days prior to the post-vaccination positive test.”

“In general, these persons have been more likely to be asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic compared with vaccinated persons.”

                    More Vaccine Problems

This latest news from the US also highlights one of the fundamental problems which those promoting the idea of mass vaccinations routinely avoid: the fact that the COVID vaccine does not actually prevent infection of the virus, nor does it prevent those who are vaccinated from further spreading the virus.

Even the vaccine manufacturers along with numerous leading science journals – have all admitted that their experimental corporate vaccine product may only reduce or mask severe symptoms in certain cases, and do not prevent vaccine recipients from potentially becoming ‘silent spreaders’ of the virus.

This latest report is problematic for state officials because nearly two million people out of Michigan’s 10 million residents have already been fully vaccinated, but the state still claims that its hospitalizations are increasing a ‘fast rate,’ although it’s not clear what state official are comparing the current level of hospitalizations to exactly.

The state is also touting a ‘record number’ of “cases,” with more than 700,000 recently testing positive, which means that Michigan (supposedly) leads the nation in new cases by population.

However, the now routine use of hyperbole by many public health officials and media outlets has made it increasingly difficult to separate the usual fear-laden headlines from an accurate science-based portrayal determining whether there is an actual pandemic happening in America.

As a result of the panic generated by a large number of positive tests, Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an Executive Order which orders all K-12 school buildings to close for the remainder of the school year.

“My number one priority right now is protecting Michigan families from the spread of COVID-19. For the sake of our students, their families, and the more than 100,000 teachers and staff in our state, I have made the difficult decision to close our school facilities for the remainder of the school year,” said Whitmer.

All this despite the fact that from the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, Whitmer imposed one of the harshest lockdowns in the United States – with many now left questioning the efficacy of lockdowns, as well as the non-scientific basis (simply counting positive test results) upon which the draconian policy is based on.

The source of the coronavirus that has left more than 3 million people dead around the world remains a mystery. But in recent months the idea that it emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) — once dismissed as a ridiculous conspiracy theory — has gained new credence.

How and why did this happen? For one, efforts to discover a natural source of the virus have failed. Second, early efforts to spotlight a lab leak often got mixed up with speculation that the virus was deliberately created as a bioweapon. That made it easier for many scientists to dismiss the lab scenario as tin-hat nonsense. But a lack of transparency by China and renewed attention to the activities of the Wuhan lab have led some scientists to say they were too quick to discount a possible link at first.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) from the start pointed to the lab’s location in Wuhan, pressing China for answers, so the history books will reward him if he turns out to be right. The Trump administration also sought to highlight the lab scenario but generally could only point to vague intelligence. The Trump administration’s messaging was often accompanied by anti-Chinese rhetoric that made it easier for skeptics to ignore its claims.

As a reader service, here is a timeline of key events, including important articles, that have led to this reassessment. In some instances, important information was available from the start but was generally ignored. But in other cases, some experts fought against the conventional wisdom and began to build a credible case, rooted in science, that started to change people’s minds. This has led to renewed calls for a real investigation into the lab’s activities before the coronavirus emerged.

British spies believe that the theory the coronavirus escaped from a Chinese lab is 'plausible,' reported The Sunday Times.

The lab-leak theory having initially been dismissed is gaining traction.

President Joe Biden has ordered US intelligence agencies to conduct a 90 day review into the source of the coro

                        ------------------------------

British spies believe that the thesis that COVID-19 leaked from a lab in China is plausible and are seeking to recruit sources on the darknet as they investigate the claim, reported The Sunday Times.

Sources told the publication that while UK intelligence was initially highly skeptical of the theory that the disease escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, they now believe the theory is "plausible."

But intelligence agents, according to the report, have few human sources of information in China, so they are trying to recruit them on the darknet, where they can speak anonymously without fear of reprisal.

In recent weeks information has emerged suggesting that the virus, which has spread across the globe, killing more than 3 million in the worst pandemic for generations, may not have developed from nature, as scientists initially believed.

The lab leak theory, pushed by President Donald Trump to score points against Beijing, was initially dismissed as a conspiracy theory by many.

After visiting Wuhan earlier this year in a report released with Chinese scientists, scientists from the World Health Organization said the theory that the virus escaped from a lab is improbable.

Many scientists believe that the virus crossed from animals, likely bats via another species, to humans in a market in Wuhan. But defenders of the lab-leak theory have pointed out that the Wuhan virology institute is one of the world's leading research centers into bat coronaviruses.

The Wuhan lab is a short distance from where the first COVID-19 cases were recorded in November. The Wall St Journal has reported that scientists from the lab had fallen sick with an illness and been hospitalized in November 2019, weeks before the first official cases.

With the new debate about the possible source of the virus, US President Joe Biden has ordered a 90-day review of intelligence into the origins of the coronavirus to establish its source.

A western intelligence source familiar with the UK intelligence investigation told the Times they did not believe the virus's origins would ever be conclusively be established due to Chinese secrecy.

"There might be pockets of evidence that take us one way and evidence that takes us another way. The Chinese will lie either way. I don't think we will ever know," said the source.

Senator Rand Paul (R., Ky.) and Dr. Anthony Fauci again clashed over alleged U.S. government funding of gain-of-function research on bat coronavirus in Wuhan, China, during testimony before a Senate committee on Tuesday.

Paul implied that Fauci misled Congress during May testimony, in which Fauci said the U.S. had never funded gain-of-function projects at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Gain-of-function research involves making viruses more contagious or deadly in a laboratory.

Paul said that in May 11 testimony, Fauci “stated that the NIH has never and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology. And yet, gain-of-function research was done entirely in the Wuhan institute by Doctor Shi [Zhengli] and was funded by the NIH.”

Paul cited a paper by WIV scientists entitled “Discovery of a rich gene pool of bat SARS-related coronaviruses provides new insights into the origin of SARS coronavirus”, which describes efforts to produce “chimeric” coronaviruses, i.e. altered by man. The paper lists the NIH as a source of funding, and Paul asserted that the research recorded in the paper “explicitly matches the definition of gain-of-function research.”

“Knowing that it is a crime to lie to Congress…do you wish to retract your May 11 claim that the NIH never funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan?” Paul asked Fauci.

“Senator Paul, I have never lied before the Congress, and I do not retract that statement,” Fauci answered. “This paper was judged by qualified staff up and down the chain as not being gain-of-function.”

Paul interjected, “When you take an animal virus, and you increase its transmissibility to humans—you’re saying that’s not gain-of-function research?”

Fauci said, “That is correct, and Senator Paul, you do not know what you are talking about, quite frankly.”

Paul then read an NIH definition of gain-of-function research.

“It says that ‘scientific research that increases the transmissibility among animals is gain-of-function,'” Paul said. The WIV researchers “took animal viruses…then increased their transmissibility to humans. How you can say that is not gain-of-function—it’s a dance, and you’re dancing around this, because you’re trying to obscure responsibility for four million people around the world dying from a pandemic.”

“I totally resent the lie you are now propagating, Senator,” Fauci said. “If you look at those viruses” studied in the WIV paper, “those viruses are molecularly impossible to result in SARS-CoV-2… You are implying what we did was responsible for the deaths of individuals. If anybody is lying here, Senator, it is you.”

In proposing a Phase 2 investigation into the pandemic origins on July 16, the director general of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, attempted to navigate a fraught and contested topic. He emphasized the importance of scientists and science, called on China to cooperate and be transparent, and said both major hypotheses for how the pandemic began should be investigated: either a zoonotic spillover or a laboratory accident. Then, China slammed the door in his face.

The rejection of the WHO plan on Thursday from Zeng Yixin, vice minister of the National Health Commission, and Yuan Zhiming, the director of the biosafety lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, was so absolute as to beggar belief. China’s propaganda mouthpiece, Global Times, quoted Mr. Zeng as saying that the Wuhan Institute of Virology had never conducted gain-of-function research that would examine whether viruses could be modified to improve their ability to infect. Mr. Yuan said that the institute “did not contact, preserve or study the novel coronavirus, and it never designed, made or leaked the virus.” No employees or students were infected, and no pathogen leakage or human infection has occurred in Wuhan’s high-level biosecurity lab since it was put into operation in 2018, he insisted.

Full coverage of the coronavirus pandemic

The evidence runs to the contrary. The institute was carrying out experiments using chimeric viruses with modified spike proteins, tested on mice with respiratory cells genetically altered to resemble those of humans. The goal was to see which were more infective. These experiments were written into grant applications, including for U.S. funds; the research began in 2014-2015 and was underway at the institute through 2019. The work was not done in the highest biosecurity level laboratory. The institute had collected bat coronavirus samples from a mine in southern China and stored genomic sequences of a number of them. The outgoing Trump administration alleged in a Jan. 15 statement that Wuhan institute workers had become ill “with symptoms consistent with both covid-19 and common seasonal illnesses.” China has refused to allow further investigation into these and other unresolved questions, while pointing instead to potential virus origins beyond its borders, and spreading disinformation that it came from a U.S. military laboratory.

Suspiciously, everywhere China looks, it comes up empty-handed. China reported to the WHO that more than 80,000 wildlife, livestock and poultry samples were checked for the virus before and after the outbreak, and none tested positive. In search of human health records, China checked 233 institutions with 76,253 records of respiratory conditions between October and November 2019 and identified 92 that might be SARS-CoV-2, but then said none were. China took offline a key database in September 2019 saying it was because of cybersecurity. When eight Chinese doctors expressed concern about a new sickness in Wuhan in December 2019, they were reprimanded for spreading rumors, and the Chinese leadership for weeks hid the truth about the transmissibility of the novel coronavirus from the WHO and the Chinese people.

Taken together, China’s answers add up to a pattern of denial, diversion and deception. Nevertheless, to prepare for future pandemics and to better understand this one, the origins investigation must go on, either by WHO or others — or both.

                              .

No one should expect the Chinese Communist Party to cooperate with a real inquiry into the origins of Covid-19. More disappointing is the lack of candor from American scientists and officials whose conflicts of interest deserve more scrutiny.

Why are you "disappointed" in that neither the Chinks nor the jews of the West wish to yawp about how they created a ZOG-virus to kill their older popjewlation, WSJ?

More than a year-and-a-half after Chinese researchers published a draft genome of Covid-19, the world still doesn’t know where the virus came from. The leading theories are an accidental lab leak or zoonotic spillover from a bat or other intermediary species.

A World Health Organization team visited Wuhan this year but Chinese officials provided little useful information. Even WHO director-general Tedros Ghebreyesus, typically a Chinese ally, criticized Beijing for a lack of transparency. He called for an audit of laboratories in Wuhan as part of the origin investigation’s next phase, but Beijing rejected the idea last week.

A senior Chinese public-health official said WHO’s plan “did not respect common sense and violated science.” The Chinese Foreign Ministry has called instead for an investigation into Fort Detrick, a U.S. military lab. A Wuhan Institute of Virology official said that his lab “did not contact, preserve or study the novel coronavirus, and it never designed, made or leaked the virus,” according to Chinese state-media. He added that there have been zero pathogen leaks or human infections since the institute opened its high-level BSL-4 lab in 2018. A Chinese official must say this or risk disappearing.

The WIV has handled coronaviruses. U.S. experts visited the lab in 2017 and 2018 and warned about a dangerous mix of subpar safety standards and infectious bat coronaviruses. In January the State Department published a fact sheet warning that several WIV researchers had been sick with Covid-like symptoms in the fall of 2019. It also noted that the group had been conducting gain-of-function research that could possibly enable viruses to infect a new species—all while collaborating with the People’s Liberation Army. And the WIV’s critical virus databases were taken offline, ostensibly for security purposes.

The U.S. knows something about the research conducted at the WIV, because American taxpayer dollars helped fund it. This was the crux of last week’s dispute between Sen. Rand Paul and Anthony Fauci, who had cast doubt on the lab-leak hypothesis in the past. In their latest bout, the Kentucky Senator accused Dr. Fauci of lying to Congress, a federal crime, when he said this year that the National Institutes of Health had never funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan. The exchange descended into shouting.

The reality is complicated. The NIH gave almost $600,000 to the WIV through a nonprofit over several years to study bat coronaviruses. Mr. Paul cited a 2017 paper from WIV researchers that included experiments combining parts of viruses to study how to better infect human cells. But Dr. Fauci said the project was “judged by qualified staff up and down the chain as not being gain-of-function.”

This might be technically true, as a 2014 federal government definition describes such research as that which “increase the ability of infectious agents to cause disease by enhancing its pathogenicity or by increasing its transmissibility.” But some scientists think the government definition is too limited and can allow de facto gain-of-function research to bypass safety protocols. Rutgers molecular biologist Richard Ebright says the NIH-funded work “was—unequivocally—gain-of-function research.”

In early 2020, Dr. Fauci emailed his deputy a paper co-written by gain-of-function pioneer Ralph Baric and a Wuhan scientist. The official responded that they would “try to determine if we have any distant ties to this work abroad.” The next day Dr. Fauci organized a call with several nongovernment virologists, but the email chain after the meeting was redacted. Weeks later, a group of scientists published a letter in The Lancet condemning “conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin.” Dr. Fauci and the public-health elite echoed the letter’s views for months.

Mr. Paul, excitable as he may be, is a medical doctor who did his homework. The Senator clearly sees a political benefit in hammering Dr. Fauci and China, but the celebrity scientist and his allies have obvious conflicts of interest. The Lancet letter was organized by Peter Daszak, president of the EcoHealth Alliance, which had funneled the NIH money to the WIV.

Mr. Daszak, Dr. Fauci and all researchers involved in gain-of-function research would suffer significant reputational damage and perhaps lose funding if scientific research they supported caused a pandemic. On Sunday Dr. Fauci said the research cooperation was necessary because “SARS-CoV-1 originated in China.” But exactly what did that cooperation yield?

                                ***

Congress should thoroughly investigate the process that led to the approval of money for the WIV and possible gain-of-function research. It should also debate limits on this kind of research in the U.S. and push for international standards. While China is unlikely to budge, its opacity has aroused justifiable suspicion around the world, and the White House should keep the pressure on Beijing and the WHO.

Democrats and much of the media will avoid the topic because Mr. Paul and the populist right have taken up this cause. Such groupthink is what prevented the lab-leak theory from being treated seriously for more than a year. Making the same mistake twice is inexcusable.
